FCGB host MRL weekend in Fond du Lac (May 3-4)

This past weekend our FCGB Midwest Regional League and State League teams results.

FCGB U17 Boys Orange - Bavarians (1-0)
The FCGB team hosted 8 teams from IL, WI and IN, this past weekend in the Midwest Regional League U17 Boys Northwest 1st Division.
The FCGB guys played their first game against the Bavarians from Milwaukee. After getting some early chances, both Alex Drabes and Taylor Heintz failed to find the back of the net when they were put in 1v1's with the Bavarian keeper. The Bavarian team seemed to, at least optically, the better play in the 1st half of the game. The FCGB backline has been solid all season and this game was no different. They did not allow the Bavarian team to create any real chances. In the 2nd half the FCGB team looked much better, they were winning most 2nd and 3rd balls and started to create more opportunities. Anthony Santaga was able to connect with Peter Johnson inside the Bavarian penalty box, in the 63rd minute. Peter finished off what later turned out to be the game winning goal. The Bavarian team never really threatened again after that it was actually the FCGB team that should have found the net a 2nd time but a sequence of some dangerous corner kicks were not converted by the Orange.

FCGB U17 Boys Orange - Mequon United (2-1)
A difficult opponent, last season Mequon "kicked" FCGB out of the State Cup competition on the same field, Marian College, in a State Cup play-in game. This time around a different picture. The score did not reflect the actual balance in this game. FCGB created a ton of chances but was only able to find the back of the "World Cup style" nets on two occasions. Heintz finished on a 2nd attempt after a Justin Key cross from the right flank. in the 2nd half Justin Gerhartz, who had just been brought onto the pitch, converted on a 25 yard shot, after setting himself up with a great 1st touch out of the air. The crossbar and the back of the Mequon goalie were needed to get the ball accross the line, but it did not make the goal less beautiful. Mequon's most dangerous forward, against the run of play, put them on the scoreboard with a tremendous left footed shot into the "upper v", leaving no pportunity for FCGB goalie Tony Klingert to get to it.

FCGB U17 Boys Orange - Chicago Fire Jrs (0-1)
Probably the best performance of the weekend was not rewarded in this Sunday morning game. FCGB started out somewhat slow but after that dictated the pace of the game. Unfortunately the Fire team "stole" the game about 1 minute into the extra time, after a missed call by the referee (FCGB right back Adam Wied was taken down on a passing attempt, leading to a Fire breakaway that was converted after GK'er Tony Klingert made a save on the initial attempt). The unwritten laws of the game tell us that if you fail to score, the ball may end up in your net instead. The FCGB team simply wasted too many opportunities and half opportunities, and it ended up biting them in the "you know what".  None the less a pretty good weekend.

FCGB U13 Boys Orange - FC Magic (0-0)

A scoreless tie which according to interim coach Quinn Ross the FCGB team largely had to thank their keeper, Marty Metzler, for who was outstanding in the FCGB goal. The FC Magic team came into this game with two wins and no losses. On a windy saturday, the FCGB team had a hard time getting the ball out of their own half off the field playing against the wind. In the 2nd half a free kick from Austin Jepson and a shot from Michael LaTorre almost put the boys in Orange in the lead. Half way through their 8 game spring season, the U13 Boys Orange team have a 1-1-2 record, 5 points, 5 goals for and 5 goals against. This upcoming weekend coach Kulas will be back for their home game against the Madison 56-ers.

FCGB U18 Boys Orange - Croatian Eagles (3-1)
No details on this game except for the fact that Notre Dame foreign exchange student Timo Stalf made his FCGB debut. The U18 Boys are 3-0 after their first three Premier League games. They will be in action in Fond du Lac on May 10-11, playing in the Wisconsin State Cup. Their first game on saturday will be a rematch with the Croatian Eagles team and their second game will be vs the defending State (and Regional) Champions FC Milwaukee. Good luck guys!
