FCGB U18 Boys Orange - SC Waukesha, 3-1 (5/17)
MYSC White - FCGB U18 Boys Orange, 1-3 (5/18)
The U18 Boys team won two games this past weekend. Saturday in their last group play game for the Wisconsin State Cup and Sunday in Madison in a Wisconsin State Premier League match.
FC Milwaukee ended up winning the U18 Wisconsin State Cup for Boys. The FCGB team lost last weekend to the Champions in group play.
FCGB U17 Boys Orange - Brookfield Red, 1-2 (5/17)
Croatian Eagles Blue - FCGB U17 Boys Orange, 3-2 (5/18)
Saturday was one of those games the U17 Orange team wants to forget quickly, it all started out well with a goal from FCGB's center midfielder Andrew Ribiero, after an assist from Taylor Heintz. The bumpy field made for a somewhat "bumpy" game also. The U17 team seemed to be content with the 1-0 lead and never really threatened after their first goal. The 2nd half started with a quick goal from the Brookfield side, the goal smelled very strongly like off-sides, but it counted none the less. The 1-2 fell after a mishit pass in the FCGB backline. A performance by the Orange team that was forgetable and was somewhat 'deserving of a loss. The bounces and calls usually do not go your way when you don't come ready to play for the entire 90 minutes.
What a difference a day can make! A late Sunday afternoon kick-off at the Croatian Eagles park in south Milwaukee, for the MRL match up with U17 North West 1st divison winner Croatian Eagles Blue.
FCGB fell behind after some lack of alertness in the backline, which did see the return of central defender Paul Giesler, who was involved in an AAU tournament in Madison all weekend. After the Croatian Eagles goal FCGB really started to play extremely well for the remainder of the game. Great tackles, good combination play, and a large and loud crowd (150+) made for an exciting game. Immediately after half-time the Croatian team got another one against the run of play after two issed clearanced by Adam and Justin, an initial save from Tony Klingert was finished in the rebound by the Eagles forward.
The Orange boys dug even deeper and scored the best goal of the afternoon after some delightful combination play between Ribiero and Tyler Harris was finished calm and cool by Alex Drabes. The 2-2 followed 10 minutes later when Peter "clutch" Johnson scored another "Peteresk" goal after initially finding the Eagles GK-er in his path, the ball rolled across the line with an Eagles defender making a last, unsuccesful, attempt to clear it off the line.
The story told about the previous game, where you usually get what you deserve, turned out to be untrue this afternoon. An innocent looking ball bounced in the FCGB penalty box, took a strange hop, and FCGB GK-er Klingert was unable to secure it, 3-2. Ribiero made a fantastic attempt in the closing minutes to get the well deserved tie, unfortunately it did not work out.
In closing our team wants to thank the Croatian Eagles Soccer Club for putting on a fantastic "spread" at their clubhouse after the game for our players and parents. The "reporter" of the story almost felt like he was back in Harlingen, the Netherlands at his local club. A great afternoon of soccer with a "third half" the way it should be, not running off to the next thing in all of our busy lives, but enjoying some great food, a few laughs and some soccer nostalgie from the likes of Aldo Santaga (a Green Bay soccer legend and also a former Croatian Eagles player, who was there to see grandson Anthony play) and a few of the senior Croatian Eagles club members.
Brookfield White - FCGB U17 Boys Blue, 0-1 (5/16)
MSC - FCGB U17 Boys Blue, 0-1 (5/18)
The U17 Blue Team advanced to 4-0-0 in the State League First Division defeating Brookfield White in Brookfield. The match was hard fought and scoreless until the Hunter Yewman found the back of the net in the 86 minute. Keeper Nick Van Pay recorded his second shut out of the season with 4 saves. The Brookfield keeper turned in a spectacular game posting 6 saves and 9 blocks.
The U17 Blue Team advance to 5-0-0 in the State League First Division and also advanced to the State Cup by defeating Milwaukee Sports Club 1 - 0 at Concordia College in Mequon. The teams had the opportunity to play this dual League and State Cup Play-In game on the new turf field at Concordia. Due to injuries and illnesses the Team played the game essentially with 11 players. Taylor Houston scored for Green Bay in the 72 minute off a steal by Nick Vande Castle and a cross by Josh Vanden Bush. Keeper Nick Van Pay recorded his third shut out with 6 saves. The U17 Blue Team now holds sole possession of first place in the State League U17 First Division. A great accomplishment for the U17 Boys Blue team who will be facing, in what turns out to be a to say the least strange matchups with, the MYSC Blue, MYSC White and the FC Green Bay Orange team in Wisconsin State Cup group play this Memorial Day weekend in Racine. State Cup groups are largely decided by the luck of the draw and this particular group sees two teams of two clubs matched up against eachother. All teams will play three games over a three-day period.
Good Luck to the Blue and Orange U17 teams, as well as the U14 Orange Boys team who will have their group play games in Appleton thsi weekend!
